ISHS Acta Horticulturae 662: VII International Symposium on Temperate Zone Fruits in the Tropics and Subtropics

INFLUENCE OF ORCHARD FLOOR MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ON CROPPING AND QUALITY OF SANTA ROSA PLUM GROWN UNDER MID HILL CONDITIONS

Authors:   B. Shylla, J.S. Chauhan
Keywords:   fruit yield, orchard practices, plum, mulch
Abstract:
Six orchard floor management practices viz., clean cultivation, glyphosate herbicide application, hay mulch, black polythene mulch, green manuring with cowpeas and intercropping with soybeans were evaluated for their influence on improving the cropping and quality of plum cv. Santa Rosa grown on Myrobalan rootstock in a field trial conducted at Solan situated in the mid hill zone of Himachal Pradesh, India. Intercropping produced larger and heavier fruits as compared to other management practices though it recorded a 15.95 per cent less yield as compared to herbicide treatment, which recorded the highest yield of 40.75 kg tree-1. Among the chemical properties of fruits, total soluble solids (TSS) and titratable acidity were the highest in fruits of the trees under glyohosate herbicide treatment, whereas, black polythene mulch treatment recorded the highest content of total and reducing sugars. The fruits of the trees under manuring with cowpeas recorded the highest non-reducing sugar content.
