Abstract:
Earlier, peach (Prunus persica Batsch) and pear (Pyrus spp.) were considered to be important fruit crops of the temperate world.
But the development of low chill cultivars made possible to these crops to grow in the subtropics of the world.
A systematic attempt has been made to review and refine the nutrient recommendations given by earlier workers in order to utilize the full potential of these two economically important fruit crops in the tropics and subtropics.
In full grown peach tree, application of 60 kg per tree FYM is found to meet out the requirement along with inorganic sources.
Peach requires higher amount of nitrogen (not less than 400 g/tree) and potassium (not less than 500 g/tree) than phosphorus.
Pre-harvest foliar spray of calcium-chloride or calcium nitrate in a range of 0.5-2.0% is found effective in minimizing physiological disorders and post-harvest losses.
Half doze of nitrogen should be applied three weeks before flowering and rest half doze applied just after fruit set.
Whole amount of FYM, phosphorus and potassium can be applied during December.
Application of micronutrients viz., ZnSO4 (0.4-0.5%) and FeSO4 (0.4%) have been found effective.
Full grown pear orchards of Uttaranchal hills can be supplied with 50-60 kg FYM along with 700 g N, 350 g P and 700 g K per tree.
However, in Tarai areas of Uttaranchal and adjoining areas of Uttar Pradesh can be administered with 500-600 g N, 400 g P and 500-600 g K per tree.
In plains, full doze of P, K and 2/3rd of N applied in January, 15 days prior to bloom bud stage and 1/3rd in May.
Calcium application (0.5-1.0% CaCl2/Ca(NO3)2) reduced physiological weight loss and spoilage in fruits.
The deficiency of zinc and iron on young foliage can easily be controlled by spraying 0.4-0.5% zinc sulphate and ferrous sulphate, respectively, during April.
