ISHS Acta Horticulturae 662: VII International Symposium on Temperate Zone Fruits in the Tropics and Subtropics

PERFORMANCE OF SUBTROPICAL PLUM CV. SATLUJ PURPLE AT DIFFERENT PLANTING DENSITIES

Authors:   G. Singh, H. Kaur, J.S. Randhawa
Keywords:   plum, planting density, fruit maturity, fruit quality
Abstract:
Trees of Plum cultivar Satluj Purple were planted at 5 spacings viz., 6x6, 6x3, 6x1.5, 3x3 and 3x1.5 m on the sandy loam soil with 8.2 pH. Trees at 6x6 m significantly produced greater canopy volume (13.25 m3) while height of trees was maximum (4.32 m) at 6x1.5 m spacing. Fruits harvested from trees at 6x6 m and 6x1.5 m were superior in size, colour, firmness and fruit quality. However, yield per hectare was highest in trees spaced at 3x1.5 m. Tree density did not affect foliar P and K status significantly whereas N content varied significantly and it was highest in trees at 6x1.5 m. Root distribution studies indicated that trees at 6x6 m exhibited more biomass horizontally, while it was closer to trunks of trees vertically downward at 3x3, 3x1.5 and 6x1.5 m spacings.
