PERFORMANCE OF SOME CULTIVARS OF DELICIOUS APPLE IN LOW ALTITUDE WARMER VALLEY AREAS OF SHIMLA

Authors:   R.P. Sharma, B.K. Karkara
Keywords:   cultivars, rootstocks, density, Delicious apple
Abstract:
In valley areas and lower hills which are comparatively warmer, there are problems of irregular bearing, less colour development and lower yields. To overcome these problems Delicious strains/spur type cultivars viz., Red Chief, Oregon Spur, Well Spur, Starkrimson Delicious and Bright-N-Early on different virus free clonal rootstocks viz., EMLA 26, EMLA 7a and EMLA 106 were introduced and planted at Progeny-cum-Demonstration Orchard Anu, in Shimla district by the Department of Horticulture, H.P. Cumulative data of 5 years indicated significantly higher average yield on EMLA 7a rootstock in respect of Oregon Spur (91.17 t/ha) and Silver Spur (89.40 t/ha). This was followed by the EMLA 106 rootstock on which the cultivars Starkrimson Delicious and Red Chief produced maximum average yield. Rootstock EMLA 7a was found to be significantly superior for higher yields over the years and this was followed by the rootstock EMLA 106.
