Abstract:
The studies on screening of gene sources for various characters in Persian walnut were undertaken during 1997-1999 on 229 seedling tree populations, in four walnut growing districts namely Kullu, Mandi, Sirmaur and Chamba of Himachal Pradesh. Based on higher or lower desired values of different characters, genetic resources were marked for 26 important characters viz. yield efficiency, high density of branching, late leafing, late flowering, clustering of female flower buds, early maturity, length of male catkin, duration of male flowering, female plant (absence of catkins), female flowering, pollen shedding, stigma receptivity, nut weight, nut width, nut height, nut thickness, pad width, pad thickness, shell thickness, kernel weight, kernel width, kernel height, kernel thickness, kernel recovery, fat percentage and protein percentage. In all, 25 trees found to possess one or more of the above desired characters which will be described in the paper and their utilization as direct cultivars or as gene sources will be highlighted.
