ISHS Acta Horticulturae 662: VII International Symposium on Temperate Zone Fruits in the Tropics and Subtropics

PRESENT STATUS AND FUTURE SCOPE OF GROWING TEMPERATE FRUITS IN RAJASTHAN

Author:   S. Mohammed
Abstract:
The state of Rajasthan is endowed with a typical subtropical climate which is characterised by very hot summer and cold winter. The maximum temperature reaches as high as 50°C in summer months and minimum temperature goes below freezing points during winter. The annual rainfall in Rajasthan varies from 164 mm in Jaisalmer to 1000 mm in Jhalawar districts with mean annual rainfall of 573 mm. The physiography is dominated by regular/irregular arid, semi-arid and sub-humid plains and mountainous ridges particularly in Aravali hills and most of the area lies between 200 to 1000 meters above mean sea level. The soils of the state vary from sandy to sandy loam and clay loam.
The low chill requiring temperate fruits such as pear (Pyrus communis), peach (Prunus persica), plum (Prunus salicina), almond (Prunus amygdalus) strawberry (Fragaria ananasa) and apple (Malus domestica) can be cultivated successfully in various districts of Rajasthan. At present, the temperate fruits such as pear, peach and plum are grown on very small area in Sriganganagar district. A preliminary trial conducted for strawberry cultivation indicates that it can be successfully grown in Udaipur, Banswara and Sriganganagar districts. Similar attempts are needed to explore the possibilities of growing other temperate fruits.
