HOST RESISTANCE TO INSECTS AND MITES, A REVIEW - A MAJOR IPM STRATEGY IN TURFGRASS CULTURE

Abstract:
The literature on host plant resistance to insects and mites for both cool- and warm-season turfgrass is reviewed. Resistance to many insect and mite pests has been identified in most of the warm-season turfgrasses but reports of cool-season resistance are less extensive. Several successful turfgrass genetic improvement programs involve the combined efforts of plant breeders, entomologists and scientists in other complementary disciplines to develop improved cultivars with biotic and abiotic stress resistance. Turfgrass cultivars with multiple pest resistance, when deployed, help to alleviate the need for pesticides and indirectly reduce potential environmental contamination associated with their usage.

Resumen

Esta contribución es una revisión de la literatura sobre la resistencia de plantas a insecto y arañas en céspedes de climas cálidos y templados. Resistencia a un gran número de plagas de insectos y arañas han sido identificados en la mayoría de céspedes de clima cálido, pero tales reportes son menos extensivos para céspedes de clima templado. Algunos programas exitosos de mejoramiento genético en céspedes envuelven la participación y esfuerzo combinado de fitomejoradores, entomólogos y científicos en otras disciplinas complementaras para desarrollar cultivares y variedades mejoradas con resistencia a estreses bióticos y abióticos. La utilización de cultivares de céspedes con resistencia múltiple a insectos ayudan a minimizar la necesidad de pesticidas e indirectamente reducen el potencial de contaminación ambiental asociado con su uso.
