Abstract:
FOREWORD
The 1st International Conference on Turfgrass Management and Science for Sport Fields was held in Athens, Greece, on June 2-7, 2003. The Conference was organized by the Department of Floriculture and Landscape Architecture of the Agricultural University of Athens (www.aua.gr) and the Hellenic Society for Horticultural Sciences (www.hshs.gr) under the auspices of the International Society for Horticultural Science (www.ishs.org).
The scientific program consisted of ten oral and one poster session.
Six keynote lectures by invited speakers covered the themes of the meeting sessions.
The various papers covered a wide range of different topics such as Soil and Water Management, Environmental Impact and Management, Turfgrass Physiology, Pests and IPM, Cultural Practices, Nutrition and Fertilization, Turfgrass Improvement and Education.
More than 200 scientists from 17 different countries attended this first Conference that provided a unique opportunity to researchers, scientists, students and professionals to present research results, to exchange scientific and technological information, share experience and to promote international cooperation.

In addition, the 87 presentations (oral and poster) provided new knowledge and a thorough insight in the newest advances in Turfgrass Management.
The submitted manuscripts were peer reviewed by the members of the Scientific Committee and then returned to the authors for the appropriate revisions.
The revised manuscripts went through a second reviewing process by the members of the Editorial Board, who came to the final decision upon each manuscript.
From the 84 submitted manuscripts, 49 oral, 28 posters and a technical note were accepted for publication in this Acta Horticulturae volume.
The high standards of the organization and the scientific impact of the oral and poster presentations substantiated the worldwide increasing trend concerning turfgrass science and research especially for the athletic fields.
We would like to thank the members of the International Scientific Committee and the members of the Editorial Board for their substantial contribution on reviewing and editing the manuscripts.
