Abstract:
Artichoke plume moth (APM) is a major pest and a limiting factor in artichoke production on the central Coast of California.
For its control, growers have traditionally relied solely on conventional, broad-spectrum insecticides.
In a preliminary field study conducted on a large commercial farm in 2001-02 season we examined the mating disruption technique for the APM management utilizing the novel method of dispensing the sex pheromone by battery operated machines (puffers) and by Shin-Etsu “rope” dispensers.
Integrated with the conventional chemical control these two methods enhanced APM suppression significantly.
Puffers deployed at the rate of 2 per acre resulted in 52% reduction in bud infestation as compared to the conventional chemical control.
