Abstract:
In Sardinia artichoke is propagated by “ovoli”, quiescent hypertrophic buds that are removed from the artichoke fields in the summer, at the end of the productive cycle, during the vegetative resting phase.
Since it is not possible either to select the plants to be propagated and to control their state of health, this method has caused a slow, progressive degradation of the populations of the artichoke variety “Spinoso sardo”. The Regional Centre for Agricultural Experimentation (C.R.A.S.) has applied and tested a technique to obtain propagation material from offshoots removed from the best plants in February-March and grown in a high-density nursery (50-60 plants/ m-2) until complete formation of the buds.
The described technique was tested on the cv. “Spinoso sardo” for over 15 years.
The application of this technique has allowed to obtain excellent results, and has led to an increase in the mean yield of heads per plant.
