Abstract:
The Italian Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Policies (MiPAF) is presently funding for 2002-2004 a national project of artichoke.
The project is composed of 15 working groups located in the main artichoke growing regions.
The project is focused on the following research areas: 1) biotechnology (aploid induction, molecular markers); 2) breeding (germoplasm collection and characterization, clonal selection, inbred lines constitution, F1 hybrid-seed production and field evaluation); 3) nursery (vegetative propagation by offshoots and in vitro techniques, rotting and cold storage of propagation material); 4) disease control (pathogen identification and survey, virus eradication methods, biological control of pathogens); 5) cultural practices (fertilization and irrigation management with and without salt stress); 6) postharvest and product quality (cold storage, packaging, processing, characterization of chemical compounds with pharmacological activities, nutrition and human health).
