Abstract:
After three generations of recurrent selection from seed obtained from a clone of the variety population ‘Tudela’ we could not cover the objective of improving earliness initially planned.
Therefore, it was decided to make the crossing of a plant derived from this selection, with the best possible growing characteristics, particularly of long heads, with the variety ' Imperial Star', donor of earliness.
In successive campaigns the backcrosses to the parents as well as the F2 were obtained.
Also the F1 of a highly early line (G-11-57) and the variety 'Imperial Star' was obtained.
The study of these materials let us conclude that the trait earliness is probably polygenic, although the disparity of results obtained by different teams suggests that response to selection depends on the materials that breeders are handling.
