PURIFICATION AND SOME PROPERTIES OF BLUEBERRY SHOESTRING VIRUS

Authors:   M.S. Lesney, D.C. Ramsdell
Abstract:
Blueberry Shoestring Virus (BBSSV) was purified from frozen infected blossoms of cv. Jersey highbush blueberry (Vaccinum corymbosum L.). The resulting virus was run through linear sucrose gradients and analyzed with an ISCO density gradient fractionator. The virus is isometric and was shown to measure ca. 21 nm in diameter. The purified virus was inoculated to healthy cv. Jersey blueberry seedlings and caused typical disease symptoms. An antiserum to the virus was made and it had a titre of 1:256. The virus was tested against the antisera of sixteen other isometric plant viruses and found to be non-related.
