INVESTIGATION OF STRAWBERRY VIRUS DISEASES IN YUGOSLAVIA |

| Abstract:
In a survey of the distribution of strawberry virus diseases in Yugoslavia, virus infection was found in 15–30% of all strawberry plants. Virus identifications were made on samples of diseased plants collected from 11 different localities. For indicator plants, seedlings of Fragaria vesca cultivars Radmilovac or Alpine, as well as a clone of healthy Madame Moutot strawberry, were used. Nearly 800 grafts were made from diseased to indicator plants and about 200 back-grafts. Virus infection was found in 517 out of 630 samples. Strawberry crinkle virus was found in 278, strawberry mottle virus in 193 and strawberry yellow edge in 31 samples. Some virus isolates were not positively identified, although symptoms on Madame Moutot strawberry resembled vein-banding and vein chlorosis. In tests with the aphid Cerosipha forbesi, only a low proportion (5–7%) of transmissions were obtained, and only crinkle virus was transmitted. Virus transmission was achieved by means of the dodder Cuscuta pentagona, but not by mechanical inoculation with sap from infected strawberries. | |
