Abstract:
The orchids are prolific in North-East India particularly Darjeeling hills due to existing conducive climatological and phytogeographical conditions.
There were 322 orchid species belonging to different genera reported from Darjeeling hills.
An evaluation programme on 21 Dendrobium spp. was taken up at Orchid Research Station, Kalimpong to find out the suitable genotypes for the particular area.
The findings revealed that D. moschatum (87.66 cm) followed by D. fimbriatum (57 cm) and D. nobile var. alba (40.83 cm) had the maximum plant height.
Where as shoot production was more in D. jenkinsii (22.33) followed by D. gibsoni (19.33) and D. ochreatum (18.00). The number of leaves per plant were highest in D. chrysotoxum (42.0) followed by D. farmeri (39.66) and D. nobilescens (30.33). The largest flower in size was produced by D. jamesonium (8.73 cm in length x 10.73 cm in width) followed by D. nobile (6.13 cm in length x 8.16 cm in width). The number of flowers per spike were highest in D. densiflorum (59.33) followed by D. fimbriatum (46.0) and D. chrysanthum (23.33). The highest no. of spikes per plant was obtained in D. jenkinsii (4.66) followed by D. fimbriatum (3.65), D. ochreatum (3.33) and D. capillipes (3.33). The longest spikes were produced by D. nobile var. alba (34.66 cm) followed by D. moschatum (33.16 cm), D. chrysanthum (31.83 cm) and D. nobile (30.65 cm). The flower spikes remained fresher in D. nobile (28.0 days) followed by D. fimbriatum (27.66 days) and D. williamsoni (26.66 days).
