Abstract:
Greenhouse production of Beit-alpha cucumbers has recently increased as a response to increased consumer demand for fresh, high quality mini cucumbers.
Although cucumber yields in the winter are typically lower than in the fall, spring, or summer, growers try to take advantage of favorable winter-market prices.
A greenhouse trial was conducted during the winter season of 2002-2003 to evaluate yield, fruit quality at harvest and during storage, and tolerance to powdery mildew of 12 varieties grown in rockwool or perlite bags. ‘4419’, ‘Alamir’, ‘General’, ‘LD CB845’, and ‘Manar’, the Florida industry standard were the highest yielding varieties.
Differences among varieties for other attributes were minimal.
