PERILLA FRUTESCENS - PERILLA RED AND ITS SECONDARY PLANT METABOLISM

Authors:   W.H. Schnitzler, R. Habegger
Keywords:   Asia greens, essential oils, components, quality, light intensity
Abstract:
Secondary plant metabolites like essential oils play an important role for internal quality of Perilla frutescens. The purple-leafed variety Perilla Red was grown in sowing intervals from end of February to end of July 2003. Essential oils were extracted by simultaneous distillation-extraction. Separation of components was conducted by GC-FID on a Supelco-Wax capillary column. With higher light intensity during the cultivation time the essential oil content increased. The quantitative compositon of essential oils changed depending on light intensity.
