Abstract:
Biological control is the “natural” regulation of populations in a certain ecosystem; as undertaken and applied by man, it is one of the oldest methods of crop protection.
At the present time, interest in this type of control grows daily in a society seeking sustainability in the different agricultural production areas.
In order to respond to this demand in the area of intensive horticultural production, the Plant Health Department of the Almería Delegation of the Andalusian Council for Agriculture and Fisheries (South Spain) has developed an exclusive web application that offers useful information about pest management using biological organisms in horticultural crops under plastic-covered greenhouses in Almería.
The information is provided by dynamic consultation of databases: BIO (control organisms), PREV (preventive measures) FITO (plant health care products), and PLAGUES (pests to be controlled). The interrelationship of these databases offers agricultural technicians and farmers a wide view of the ways in which they can control a specific plant health problem.
The results of this project are available at http://desaveal.ual.es, here, biological control is treated as a realistic, effective and valuable defense strategy against pests that obtains high-quality products.
