GREENHOUSE VEGETABLES IN FLORIDA'S MILD WINTER CLIMATE - 2004 UPDATE

Authors:   R.V. Tyson, R.C. Hochmuth, E.M. Lamb, E. McAvoy, T. Olczyk, M. Lamberts
Keywords:   Bell pepper, European cucumber, lettuce, hydroponics
Abstract:
Three surveys conducted in 1991, 1996, and 2001 documented significant changes in the Florida greenhouse vegetable industry during the decade. European cucumbers were the predominant crop in 1991 and 1996 but fell to fourth in 2001 behind colored pepper, tomatoes, and herbs. Production increased from 27 hectares in 1991 to 39 hectares in 2001. Production media changed during the decade with a decline in the use of rockwool and an increase in the use of perlite. Extension agents and program specialists conducted phone surveys of the counties with the most greenhouse production to establish a 2004 update of the industry as it exists in the 2003-2004 growing season. This data will be compared to previous surveys with changes and trends discussed.
