Abstract:
Many grafting combinations between European plum cultivars and various rootstocks were studied over a 10 year period, on different soil conditions (forest brown soils, rhegosoils and alluvial soils). The production capacity, consistent bearing, yield quality and growth vigor of cultivars grafted on various rootstocks proved to be dependent on the soil types.
The largest fruit yields (16-22 t / ha) were recorded on alluvial and forest brown soils when the rootstocks used were the seedling types (‘Mirobolan 7C’, ‘Roşior văratic’, ‘Oteşani 8’) and the clonal types (‘Miroval’, ‘Pixy’, ‘Saint Julien A’ and ‘Oteşani 11’). These two soil types were the most favorable for plum growing in the northern area of Oltenia.
Rhegosoils are frequently found in the Oltenia region and these proved to be limitative for plum growing.
Most of rootstocks used were susceptible to the stresses caused by this soil type and this was demonstrated by a 10-20 % reduction of tree growth in comparison with plum trees on the other soil types.
Also, the yield was diminished with 15-40 %, becoming biennial, the fruits were smaller, the fruit flesh was firm but the taste was better.
Under the conditions of stress caused by rhegosoils, the best behavior was recorded when ‘Mirobolan 7C’, ‘Roşior văratic’, ‘Oteşani 8’ were used as plum rootstocks.
