ISHS Acta Horticulturae 658: I International Symposium on Rootstocks for Deciduous Fruit Tree Species

THE INFLUENCE OF ROOTSTOCK CLONES ON YIELD, FRUIT SIZE AND COLOURING OF APPLES OF THE CULTIVAR 'JONAGOLD'

Author:   T. Jakubowski
Keywords:   Malus domestica, apple, rootstock, fruit quality
Abstract:
The influence of 21 selected rootstock clones and 3 standard rootstocks, M.9, M.26 and Mark, on the yield and fruit quality of the apple cv. ‘Jonagold’ was evaluated. The experiment was established in the spring of 1995 in the Experimental Orchard at Dąbrowice near Skierniewice. One-year-old, well branched maiden trees were planted in a randomised block design, with 4 replications and 3 trees per plot. The trees, planted at a distance of 4 x 2m, were trained in the spindle bush system. In 2001, the yield, fruit size and fruit skin colouring were evaluated. A Greffa grading machine was used for fruit calibration. The yield in 2001 was high and ranged from 16.1 to 73.4 kg/tree, depending on the rootstock. The biggest fruits were produced by trees grafted on Mark and the clones PJ 577, PJ 496, PJ 644. The smallest fruits were picked from the trees on clone PJ 629. The highest share of fruits over 7.5 cm in diameter was produced by the trees grafted on Mark, PJ 567, PJ 496, and PJ 641. The best coloured fruits, with the blush over 75% of skin surface, were the fruits harvested from the trees grafted on PJ 577 and PJ 563.
