Abstract:
Buds of the sweet cherry 'Bigarreau Van' (Prunus avium L.) were grown on Inmil and F.12/1 rootstocks under seven nutrient regimes over one season.
The frequency and length of sylleptic branches, and thus the release of laterals from apical dominance, varied between treatments.
Nutritional and rootstock effects on the frequency of branching were correlated with a modification of internode length, but not the primary axis growth rate prior to branching.
Subsequent sylleptic shoot elongation was, however, correlated with the axis growth rate.
The rootstocks differed considerably in the timing of sylleptic branching, indicating that root factors play a significant role in syllepsis.
