VARIABILITY IN SUSCEPTIBILITY TO PLUM POX VIRUS IN NATURAL WOODY HOSTS, MYROBALAN AND BLACKTHORN

Author:   J. Polák

Abstract:
Results of studies on variability in susceptibility to PPV in natural woody hosts are presented. The relative concentration of PPV protein in leaves and the intensity of PPV symptoms in leaves (and fruits – myrobalan) of naturally growing myrobalans and blackthorns were evaluated. The lower PPV concentration was proved in leaves of myrobalan (5.0 x 10-2 to 1.56 x 10-3), the higher one in leaves of blackthorn (1.25 x 10-2 to 3.95 x 10-4). Blackthorns were found to be more susceptible to PPV. High variability in susceptibility to PPV exists among both, naturally grown individual myrobalan and blackthorn trees. The probability to obtain individuals of blackthorn as source of resistance to PPV is lower in comparison with myrobalan.
