SYNERGISTIC INTERACTION BETWEEN CUCUMBER MOSAIC CUCUMOVIRUS AND PASSION FRUIT WOODINESS POTYVIRUS IN PASSION FRUIT

Authors:   N.S. Bashir, J.W. Bowyer, M.R. Gillings
Keywords:   passion fruit, woodiness, cucumber mosaic, synergism, RT-PCR
Abstract:
Passion fruit woodiness disease has been a major limiting factor in developing passion fruit industry in Australia. A mild-strain protection system, established to control the disease, has been working for many years until an outbreak of ‘tip necrosis’ devasted the protected passion fruit on the North Coast of New South Wales. Our studies with dsRNA extraction and RT-PCR analysis correlated mosaic with passion fruit woodiness or cucumber mosaic viruses, whereas the more severe symptoms such as stunting, ‘tip necrosis’, terminal bunching, lumpy fruit and vein clearing were usually associated with both viruses.
