Abstract:
The reversion disease of black currant has been observed in Hungary since the middle of 60’s.
The presence of the causal agent of this disease, the Blackcurrant reversion associated virus (BRAV) was confirmed by indexing and by RT-PCR in 2000-2001. Visiting old currant orchards in spring 2003 reverted red currant plants were also found.
This was the first time when severe flowers symptoms on black currant were observed in our country and in the case of red currant the flower symptoms also were characteristic.
Black- and red currant samples of symptomatic plants were collected and tested by mechanical inoculation on Chenopodium quinoa and by RT-PCR using five different primer sets.
One of the sets was specific for the viral coat protein gene, the other four sets amplified segments from the RNA2 3’-NTR. The presence of big buds on reverted plants was noted and the gall mite vector of BRAV: Cecidophyopsis spp. was checked in the big buds by light microscopy.
This is the first report of BRAV infecting red currant in Hungary.
