Abstract:
The actual viticultural assortment, although allowing the obtention of different types of wines of great diversity, requires continuous improvement by creating new cultivars combining superior features of production and quality.
The improvement of vine cultivars during the latest decades in Romania has made a significant progress in grape yield and quality, due to the creation of new cultivars.
Following the purpose of continuous diversity, and as a result of the research works undertaken at the Research Station for Viticulture and Enology Murfatlar, the new wine grape cultivars ‘Columna’, ‘Mamaia’ and ‘Cristina’ were created. ‘Columna’ was obtained by hybridization between ‘Pinot gris’ and ‘Grasa de Cotnari’, used as a basis for making superior white dry and half-dry wines. ‘Mamaia’ was obtained by hybridization between ‘Merlot’ and ‘Muscat Ottonel’, good for superior and special red wines and flavors. ‘Cristina’ was created for fine dry red wines with good acidity, successfully completing the grape assortment of Dobrudgea vineyard.
