Abstract:
“Xinomavro” is one of the most important red-wine grape cultivars (Vitis vinifera L.) of Greece. Different soil, climate and viticultural technique interactions, result in great variability in respect with morphological, ampelographical and physiological characters of the specific cultivar. Thus, clonal selection procedures match perfectly with “Xinomavro”, aiming to improvement of wine quality. These procedures are labour and time consuming, lasting up to twelve years. In the present work, clonal selection of Xinomavro was performed by following a combined protocol based on the respective ones of France, Italy and the Laboratory of Viticulture (Agricultural University of Greece). Clonal selection procedures started in 1995 according to this new protocol (named ‘Vitro’), including a) marking of existing biotypes grown in different “Xinomavro” cultivation centers, b) virus detection (ELISA, multiplex nested RT-PCR and indexing), c) genetic identification and discrimination, using molecular methods (RAPD-PCR), d) establishment of a study collection of all virus-free biotypes (clones), e) enological evaluation, f) installation of a vineyard for comparative agronomic and enological evaluation and finally g) multiplication of the most interesting clones. Only five, out of 20 initially selected biotypes with stable characteristics, seem to bear distinct enological features and fulfil requirements for their recognition as “clones” of “Xinomavro”.
