Abstract:
Crop load is one of the most important factors affecting fruit and wine quality.
It is measured as leaf area to fruit weight or crop to pruning weight ratio and expresses the reproductive to vegetative ratio.
Crop to pruning weight ratio is the most practical measure and can conveniently be measured in the field by the growers.
The optimal reported values for the production of high quality fruit and wine ranged between 4 and 12 crop to pruning weight ratios and were influenced to a certain extent by the type of training system, canopy management treatments applied and variety.
Cultural practices such as drip irrigation and fertigation combined with canopy management practices such as cluster and shoot thinning are efficient tools for controlling the crop load and thereby fruit and wine quality.
