ISHS Acta Horticulturae 65: Symposium on High Density Planting

HIGH DENSITY APPLE PLANTINGS IN HUNGARY

Author:   F. Gyuro
Abstract:
The total orchard area of Hungary is 163 000 ha of which 104 000 ha is occupied by commercial plantings. The area of commercial apple production is 50 000 ha. The average area of an orchard is 62 ha.

Fifty percent of the apple trees are grown in standard tree orchards (125 trees/ha), 40% are in spindlebush plantations (300 trees/ha) and 10% are in hedgerow orchards (630 trees/ha). The average annual yield over the first 15 years from planting has been shown to be 10. 9, 30. 6 and 38. 2 t/ha for these orchards respectively and the yields in kg/man-hour 17, 33 and 50. In contrast High Density Orchards at 2 000 trees/ha have yielded 67 kg fruit per man-hour of labour.
