RESULTS OF ULTRA HIGH DENSITY ORCHARDS IN THE WESTERN PART OF POLAND |

| Abstract:
Experiments with high density planting of orchards have been carried out at the Przybroda Experiment Station near Poznan since 1973. The investigations consisted of two blocks. In the first one, one-year-old trees of Starkrimson, Azwell Spur and Cortland cvs, budded on MM.106 rootstocks, were planted in early spring in 1973. There were two sub blocks in which trees were planted at 100 x 50 cm (20 000 trees/ha) and 150 x 75 cm (8 880 trees/ha). When the trees started to grow vigorously, Alar applications at different times during June were employed. First flowering and bearing occurred in 1974 and increased significantly in 1975 (table 1). It seemed that total yield in this experiment was more connected with the number of trees per unit than with the cultivars and the time of Alar application. In the second block M.26 rootstocks were planted in early spring of 1973 and were budded in July of that year with seven cultivars. In 1974 one-year-old trees were obtained, on which flower buds were initiated without spraying by growth substances. The first yield ranged from 2.2 to 6.3 t/ha. The highest yield was obtained from Gold Spur and Red James Grieve trees and the lowest from Vista Bella and McIntosh Spurs evs. | |
