ISHS Acta Horticulturae 65: Symposium on High Density Planting

THE ECONOMICS OF INTENSIVE ORCHARDS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

Authors:   C. P. Stephens, J.A.H. Nicholson
Abstract:
This paper provides an economic appraisal of current orchard systems as planted in Britain today. Growers were interviewed in order to establish their attitudes to these systems, and it is clear that many approach investment appraisal in an unsatisfactory manner. It was established which systems growers were likely to choose for their next planting, and the paper focuses on these.

The economics of current and experimental systems were compared with respect to their Internal Rates of Return, Present Values per $1 000 invested based on discounted cash flow budgets and to their Pay-back periods. Cox's Orange Pippin centre-leader bush on M.9 or MM.106 and Golden Delicious single row spindle on M.9 are the most promising current systems assuming good quality fruit. The sensitivity of these commercial systems to varying conditions has also been tested.
