ISHS Acta Horticulturae 65: Symposium on High Density Planting

SIZE CONTROLLING APPLE ROOTSTOCKS

Author:   A.P. Preston
Abstract:
The present position of size controlling apple rootstocks is reviewed in the light of results from recently completed long-term field trials. Data from 15-year-old trees on semi-dwarfing and dwarfing rootstocks show that relative tree size and cropping at 7 years from planting would justify rapid multiplication of selected clones for distribution to nuclear stock nurseries. Suggestions are made for future work, both with rootstocks and with scion varieties on their own roots, as methods of controlling tree size.
