Abstract:
The soft fruit industry has shown increasing interest in red currants and some of the old cultivars can be worthy of reconsideration for modern markets.
Within a genebank collection of Ribes rubrum, at Pometet, Denmark, 43 old cultivars were described in 2001 and 2002. The descriptions were based on the UPOV list for Ribes, with particular focus on descriptors for fruits and leaves.
The content of soluble solids, acid and colour of fruits were also analysed.
The cultivars were separated into six groups, with a variation in colour from very dark red (‘Futurum’), to red, pink and white, and one red striped fruit (‘Perleribs’). The ripening period varied with 2 weeks with six very early cultivars (five of these white), 12 early, 15 medium, 8 late and only three very late season genotypes.
Half of the cultivars showed uniform ripening.
The average plant height was 121 cm, with variation from 60 to 165 cm.
Some genotypes had spreading bushy forms while others were erect.
Racemes varied in lengths from 6 to 13 cm, with berry numbers from 4 to 17. Length and berry number were not always positive correlated.
Only three cultivars had sugar content above 12% (‘Spätlese’, ‘New Red Dutch’ and ‘Perleribs’). ‘Futurum’ had the highest acid content (3.4 g/100g FW), while the white cultivars in general had the lowest acid content with an average content of 2.4 g/100g FW. The cultivar ‘Futurum’ has a high acid content and an unusual dark colour and may interest industry. ‘Perleribs’ has attractive, sweet and unusual white fruits with red stripes and could interest home gardeners.
