ISHS Acta Horticulturae 649: Euro Berry Symposium - Cost 836 Final Workshop

DISEASE RESISTANCE IN STRAWBERRY BREEDING PROGRAMMES - MAJOR PATHOGENS IN EUROPEAN STRAWBERRY PRODUCTION

Author:   P. Parikka
Keywords:   Fragaria x ananassa, fungal diseases, screening methods
Abstract:
The major fungal pathogens on strawberry in Europe are Phytophthora cactorum, Colletotrichun acutatum, Phytophthora fragariae var. fragariae, Verticillium dahliae, Botrytis cinerea and Sphaerotheca macularis. Disease resistance is included in strawberry breeding programmes in many European countries. Traditional breeding methods are mainly used and screening for resistance is performed during different stages of selecting the material. Marker-assisted breeding has only recently been started with Colletotrichum acutatum and Phytophthora cactorum. In COST 836 a questionnaire was compiled concerning the methods used in breeding for resistance and screening the breeding material.
