ISHS Acta Horticulturae 649: Euro Berry Symposium - Cost 836 Final Workshop

HOW SHOULD STRAWBERRY GERMPLASM COLLECTIONS BE EVALUATED TO MAXIMISE THEIR VALUE TO PLANT BREEDERS?

Author:   D.W. Simpson
Keywords:   Fragaria x ananassa, breeding, genebanks, cultivars
Abstract:
Strawberry germplasm collections may be maintained for a variety of different purposes. Strawberry breeders are among the principal users of these collections and they should interact to share both germplasm and information. It is important that the germplasm database contains information to enable breeders to select appropriate genotypes for use as parents. There should be accurate information on origin, regional adaptation and a wide range of phenotypic traits that may be of interest for genetic improvement. Whenever possible, the evaluation of genotypes should be based on objective assessments and resistance to pests and diseases should be measured in relation to common standard cultivars.
