Abstract:
Due to the environmental restrictions there will be a strong control in Europe on the quality of drainage water.
For this reason closed soilless production systems are expected to develop.
This implicates disinfection of the percolate prior to re-use.
On the other hand, to contend with the regulations of the peatland exploitation, alternative sustainable substrates must be developed.
Several locally produced organic materials (wood fibres, cork, composted vine shoots etc.) are considered renewable resources without ecological drawbacks.
