Abstract:
Twenty-six strawberry cultivars have been evaluated from 1999 to 2003 in 14 experimental fields located in seven countries: France (2), Switzerland (2), Italy (5), Greece (1), Portugal (1), Spain (2) and Turkey (1). In these countries the network has extended 9° degrees of latitude between 44° (Bergerac) and 35° (Marsala) latitude north. The height above sea level varied from 560 m (Cuneo) to over 1000m (Bruson). The South Europe area can be divided into 3 sub-areas: only Andana, Carisma, Gaviota and Paros cultivars were consider to be adapted to the sub-area A (warmer areas); the best variety of the sub area B (France and Po Vallye in Italy) were Alice, Cifrance, Cigoulette, Cilady, Madeleine®Civmad, Maya, Onda and Patty; in sub area C (Mountain area) only Madeleine in Switzerland and Maya and Granda in Italy performed well.
