Abstract:
WELCOME
As Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee of this Symposium, it is a great honor to me to welcome our distinguished participants - and guests - who visit us today in Mendoza, "the land of sun and good wine". Good wine that is the result of man's efforts, of our exceptional climate and of our soil's excellence and the direct consequence of the use of water from our mountain rivers that carry - through a large system of canals and ditches- the green marvel of life to our piedmont oases.
While preparing the sessions for the Symposium, we were agreeably surprised by the number and quality of the papers that were submitted from different parts of the world.
There is no doubt that this will be a good opportunity to present, inform and discuss many aspects related to the theme of the Symposium and to contribute to major scientific and technological breakthroughs.
Also, a timely and adequate transfer of knowledge will make it possible to reach, in the short term, the degree of innovation that our farmers need in order to improve their current competitiveness and standard of living.
It is expected that the different presentations that will be made by distinguished especially invited local and foreign speakers will promote the intensive discussion of new ideas among participants.
We also hope that the field trip included in the program will enable our enthusiastic visitors to be in direct contact with agriculture and with our countrymen while enjoying the beautiful landscape of our irrigated oases.
Finally, I wish to thank all governmental and non-governmental institutions, private companies and individuals who through their direct participation, contributions and personal efforts, have made this event possible.
And I also wish to express our appreciation to all our guests for believing in what they are doing and for their willingness to share their experiences in this Symposium.
By reiterating our welcome I want you to know that all the members of the Organizing Committee are here to help you clear up your doubts, solve your problems and do their best so that you can make the most of this unforgettable and pleasant stay with us.

BIENVENIDOS
En mi carácter de Presidente de la Comisión Organizadora Local del "Simposio Internacional sobre Riego y Relaciones Hídricas en Vid y Frutales" es para mí un gran honor dar la bienvenida a todos los distinguidos participantes -y a sus acompañantes- que hoy nos visitan aquí en nuestra Provincia de Mendoza, proverbial tierra del sol y del buen vino.
Buen vino que es producto del esfuerzo del hombre, el prodigio del clima y las bondades del suelo y consecuencia directa del aprovechamiento del agua de nuestros ríos de montaña que lleva -a través de una extensa red de canales y acequias- la maravilla verde de la vida, a nuestros oasis pedemontanos.
Durante las sesiones de preparación del Simposio nos hemos visto gratamente sorprendidos por el número y la calidad de los trabajos presentados provenientes de los más diferentes lugares del mundo.
A no dudarlo ésta será una muy buena ocasión para presentar, informar y discutir los diferentes aspectos involucrados en la temática del Simposio contribuyendo así al avance científico-tecnológico.
Asimismo, una oportuna y adecuada transferencia de conocimientos permitirá alcanzar, en el corto plazo, el grado de innovación que requieren nuestros productores para mejorar su actual competitividad y nivel de vida.
Se espera que las distintas exposiciones a cargo de los prestigiosos conferencistas locales y extranjeros especialmente invitados promuevan un alto nivel de discusión de nuevas ideas entre los participantes.
Deseamos también que la Jornada de campo incluida en la programación permita a nuestros dilectos visitantes un contacto directo con la agricultura y el hombre de campo mendocinos mientras disfrutan de la belleza del paisaje de nuestros oasis regadíos.
Finalmente deseo agradecer a todas aquellas Instituciones gubernamentales y no gubernamentales, empresas privadas y personas que -a través de su participación directa, contribuciones o trabajo personal- han hecho posible este evento que hoy nos convoca.
Y, muy especialmente, agradecer a todos los presentes por creer en el trabajo que realizan y por estar dispuestos a compartir sus resultados en este Simposio.
Al reiterarles la bienvenida a nuestra tierra quiero que sepan que todos los miembros del Comité Organizador estamos a su disposición para ayudar a resolver sus dudas, solucionar sus dificultades y hacer todo lo que esté a nuestro alcance para que ustedes disfruten una inolvidable y muy placentera estadía entre nosotros

PREFACE
The papers contained in this volume of Acta Horticulturae report the Proceedings of the International Symposium on Irrigation and Water Relations in Grapevine and Fruit Trees.
Keynote speakers and authors of selected contributed oral and poster presentations were given the opportunity to submit a manuscript for publication.
The manuscripts were reviewed by the conference Editor and members of the Editorial Board.
Only those papers judged suitable for publication following the authors consideration of reviewer suggestions appear in this volume of Acta Horticulturae.
The ISHS acknowledges and appreciates the contribution of the editors and the reviewers.
They have made a significant contribution to improving the quality of this publication.
