VARIABILITY OF MANGO SEEDLINGS AS A FUNCTION OF CONTAINER TYPE, AGE OF ROOTSTOCK AND GRAFTING METHOD - A CASE OF EVALUATION OF EXPERIMENTAL DESIGNS

Authors:   A.T Rossetti, A.T. Cavalcante Júnior, L.M. Barros
Keywords:   variance, significant interaction, optimum plot size, experimental error, significant differences.
Abstract:
Suitable planning is required when designing nursery experiments with relatively homogenous materials to provide reliable estimates of parameters and ensuring a safe application of statistic tests. The optimum plot size is the one which provides the least variance from the mean in each treatment and favors the largest possible number of replications, minimizing the experimental error estimate, enhancing the detection of significant differences, if any, and the efficiency of the statistic tests to be applied. The production of mango seedlings in plastic bags can be made by both top and lateral grafting. Seedlings produced in polyethylchloroethane - PVC tubes reduce the variance. Rootstock aged 60 days and 90 days, respectively, may be used regardless of grafting method and container type.
