Abstract:
The adequate planning of experiments with seedlings in nurseries and in other environments involving uniform germplasm demands special attention so that the experimental design will permit reliable estimation of parameters and the correct application of the statistical tests. The best size of the experimental unit is that gives the lowest variance for the mean of each treatment, and allows the highest possible number of replications. In addition, the estimation of the experimental error must be lowest making possible to detected significant differences where they exist, and increasing the efficiency of the statistical tests used. In the present study, mango seedlings from nucellus embryos presented the lowest variances, better development in PVC pots with the following substrate: a) 2 parts of burned rice husk + 1 part of straw + 1 part of clay; d) 1 part of burned rice husk + 1 part of organic compound. Seedlings from zygotic embryos, with similar variances, exhibited better development in polyethylene bags, on the following substrate: a) 2 parts of burned rice husk + 1 part of straw + 1 part of clay, and b) 1 part of burned rice husk + 1 part of straw + 1 part of clay. The highest variability was found in seedlings from nucellus embryos grown in polyethylene bags. Although the statistical design had been reasonable the low levels of fitting, of 66.59% and 54.02% for plant height and number of leaves, respectively, probably occurred due to the low number of replications (only three), clearly below the desirable minimum of 10, making difficult a good estimation of errors, mainly of those related to the plots.
