Abstract:
PREFACE
It is a great pleasure to present this edition of the Acta Horticulturae in two volumes containing the papers approved by the Editorial Review Board from those presented in the 7th International Mango Symposium, which was held in Recife, Pernambuco State, Brazil, September 22-27, 2002.
Mango is an uncomparable tasty fruit which is named “The Queen of the Tropical Fruits”. Its large production in the world around 25 million tonnes make it known as one of the most relevant tropical fruit commodities in the world.
However, to participate in this global market scenary, scientists and producers look for improving basic knowledge and use modern technology, in order to contribute for increasing mango yield and offer high quality fruit.
The seven International Mango Symposia oraganised so far have aimed topromote and to provide a great forum to discuss up-to-date technologies for mango development and production.
Brazil, with a production higher than 700 thousand metric tonnes, is the second largest mango exporter in the world due to mainly its strong and state-of-the –art dated industry.
The 7th International Mango Symposium had as main theme “Mango Production and Quality under Sustainable Environment” and attracted 458 participants from 32 countries, 263 papers were presented.
The symposium program included conferences, workshops, oral and poster presentations as well as interesting professional tours and commercial exhibition, allowing scientists, extensionists, producers and mango exporters to discuss their concerns and exchange experiences from different areas of interests.
These two volumes have 11 chapters named: Conferences, Workshops, Crop Management, Fruit Processing and Technology, Genetics and Breeding, Marketing, Plant Nutrition, Plant Physiology, Plant Protection, Postharvest and Propagation.
The edition comprises the 92 full papers approved by the Editorial Review Board.
The Organizing Committee would like to thank all the contributors and members of the Editorial Board, institutional supporters and especially authors and co-authors.
We hope that the next symposia will eliminate our failures and improve the success for a further development of mango crop worldwide.

PREFACE
The papers contained in this volume of Acta Horticulturae report the Proceedings of the Seventh International Mango Conference.
Keynote speakers and authors of selected contributed oral and poster presentations were given the opportunity to submit a manuscript for publication.
These manuscripts were reviewed by the conference Editors and members of the Editorial Committee.
Only those papers judged suitable for publication following the authors consideration of reviewer suggestions appear in this volume of Acta Horticulturae.
The ISHS acknowledges and appreciates the contribution of the editors and the reviewers.
They have made a significant contribution to improving the quality of this publication.
