AN INVITATION TO EXPLORE THE WORLD OF MINIATURE BONSAI

Author:   A. Hasegawa
Keywords:   Shohin Bonsai, history, highlights, Kadai (jardinière), Kazaridana (Shoku: decorated shelf)
Abstract:
The art of Bonsai dates to the 13th or 14th century in Japan but Miniature Bonsai arose only in the late 19th or early 20th century. While the size criteria are not clearly defined, it is normally possible to hold one or two Miniature Bonsai pots in one hand. Many pots can be grown and enjoyed in a small space. Works are exhibited on Bonsai shelves (out of doors) or indoors, also on decorated shelves, and many rules apply, each intended to enhance aesthetics and enjoyment. Desired features of Bonsai works include prominent roots, elevated trunks, ill-defined tip or top of the tree (creating the impression of old age), and good balance between the size of the tree and the pot. Because of the expense and time involved, little formal research has been conducted with Bonsai. Still, the number of species proven suitable for Bonsai treatment is growing steadily and, as nurturing plants is recognized for its healing value, Bonsai is increasingly popular.
