Abstract:
Since 1996, in the proximity of Murfatlar vineyard, the Nuclear Power Central from Cernavoda was built and put into function. The CANDU reactor is one of the surest types in the world. Radioactive emissions are low under normal conditions of function, but there are tritium and carbon-14 emissions that can, in time, accumulate in the trophic chain and finally in humans. The main radioactive waste products, in gaseous and liquid status, are associated with heavy water. Emissions of heavy tritiated water (HTO) increase during times of Central activity. With the aim of population protection, maximal limits of emission (LDE) were calculated and established in such a way as to not surpass the annual dose limit. Together with colder water, HTO arrives in the Danube River and from there can move into irrigation canals. Through irrigation and by ground water, HTO arrives in grapevine growing systems. The goal of the research is to establish overall conditions to create a tritium transfer model for vine growing systems and to evaluate the radiological impacts of consumption of vine products (grapes for wine and table use) under the conditions of routine emissions. A interdisciplinary collective from the Research Centre Murfatlar and from the Radioecology Laboratory in the National Institute for Atomic Physics made observations and determinations of HTO content in vine systems, the atmosphere, precipitated water, soil and vegetative material, and in grapes and wines. For comparison, determinations were made by the same collective the Nuclear Power Central was installed and functioning.
