Abstract:
Viticulturists have been, and still are, searching for instruments to measure vineyard balance, but I believe most discussions of vineyard balance center around the concepts of the third definition.
We think of a vineyard which is in balance as having arrived at some stability between an equality of opposing elements.
Thus, we need to first agree what are the 'two sides of the accoun', and we should understand the elements which affect the size of each side.
However, it would be a mistake to believe that concepts of definition 4, aesthetically pleasing integration of elements, are not a major influence in vineyard design.
The final concept - a remainder - as in how much money remains in my bank
balance, should not be ignored.
A vineyard is an economic enterprise.
If there is not a favorable balance between cost of production and crop value, then the bank balance might not be as attractive as the vineyard balance.
Economic elements determine which path is appropriate to achieve vineyard balance.
