ISHS Acta Horticulturae 64: Symposium on Production of Potted Plants and Cut Flowers

REGENERATION OF BEGONIA HIEMALIS IN VITRO

Author:   M. Appelgren
Abstract:
Two mm segments of the flower peduncle of Begonia xhiemalis cv. 'Schwabenland' were grown on a modified Murashige & Skoog's medium with different combinations of auxin and cytokinin. Shoot and root formation occured only when both hormones were added simultaneously to the medium and the auxin to cytokinin ratio was high. - The motherplant temperature had a pronounced effect on the regeneration. In August 21°C gave the best shoot and root formation, in late October 18°C and in December 15°C. In February 21°C was again the best temperature. When the motherplants were grown for four weeks in controlled environment (growth rooms) and in short days a mother plant temperature of 15°C seemed to give both the higest percentage of shoot and root producing segments and the highest number of shoots and roots per segment.
