Abstract:
Color is an integral part of our life and we often express colors using the names of minerals, animals, plants and other natural objects.
Since plants have a close relation to our life as food, drinks, medicines, clothes, dyes, etc., there are many color names derived from the plant names, an important cultural considerations in People-Plant Relationships.
At present, in Japan there are 176 color names which originated from the names of plant species.
Most of the plants from which the color names were derived are ornamentals or species used for foods or drinks, and their color names have been primarily adopted from flower or fruit colors.
This research was conducted to investigate what color names derived from plant names were known by the undergraduate students.
Participants were asked to describe the color names derived from plant names and the part of plants from which color names derived.
The results of this study suggested that the colors named after plant species are not always recognized in relation to the plants concerned or the parts, although these plants are very popular in our daily life.
