ISHS Acta Horticulturae 636: XXVI International Horticultural Congress: Key Processes in the Growth and Cropping of Deciduous Fruit and Nut Trees

EFFECT OF ROOTSTOCKS ON FLORAL AND POLLINATION BIOLOGICAL TYPES OF APPLE CULTIVARS

Abstract:
The effect of rootstocks was manifested in floral and pollination biological types of apple cultivars. Total dichogamy and protogyny were common in trees on rootstock M.9 in cultivars ‘Mutsu’ and ‘Jonagold’. Delayed homogamous flowers occurred most frequently in cvs. ‘Gloster’, ‘Jonnee’ and ‘Idared’, and also on the rootstock M.9. In trees on the rootstocks M.4, M.26 and MM.106 three floral biological types: protogyny, delayed homogamy beginning with protogyny, and homogamy could be observed within a tree. This mixed type was the most advantageous, since some flowers could be pollinated by wind and others by insects within the same tree. The results suggest a possible role of floral biological types influencing yield.
