Abstract:
It is well known in literature that ethylene induces gum formation in fruits and stems of Prunus domestica. We found that methyl jasmonate (JA-Me) induced gum in plum fruits and shoots in a way similar to ethephon.
In addition to gum induction, ethephon greatly stimulated anthocyanin formation and fruit abscission but JA-Me induced gum formation over a longer period with no effect on anthocyanin accumulation.
Simultaneous application of inhibitors of jasmonate biosynthesis together with ethephon greatly inhibited gum production, but inhibitors of ethylene biosynthesis applied simultaneously with JA-Me did not limit gum formation.
Inhibitors of cell wall polysaccharide biosynthesis, applied simultaneously with ethephon or JA-Me, did not inhibit gum production.
JA-Me applied simultaneously with ethephon substantially stimulated gum production in shoots in comparison to these compounds applied separately.
Polysaccharide composition of gums in different tissues of plum was very similar.
Possible modes of action of these plant hormones and pathway(s) of gum biosynthesis are discussed.
