Abstract:
Apple culture has increased quickly in Southern Brazil over the last 20 years. Plant growth, yield and fruit quality are directly influenced by many factors related to environmental conditions and orchard management. The unproductive non-bearing time following planting trees must be as short as possible; therefore, the availability of one-year old plant material with several lateral branches is of great importance. The trial reported here was carried out in a commercial nursery, in the region of Pelotas, Brazil, on the apple cv. ‘Catarina’ on Marubakaido rootstock. Promalin® (GA4+7 + BA) was tested at four concentrations of: zero, 500, 1000 and 1500 mg L-1 with the objective of evaluating its effect on the production of lateral branches in the nursery producing one-year old apple trees. Spray solutions were applied to the apical portion (40 cm) of plants. After 160 days, branch length, number of developed buds, number of buds/branch and trunk diameter were evaluated. The use of Promalin® at the highest concentration increased the number of sprouted buds and promoted the production of trees with compact foliage, with a reduction of individual branch length. It is concluded that Promalin® was effective in producing high quality trees in Brazilian nurseries.
