Abstract:
Sylleptic shoot formation in sweet cherry was obtained in the nursery by deblading apical leaflets, the application of cytokinins and avoiding pinching of the scion terminal shoot. ‘Kordia’, ‘Celeste’, ‘Summit’, and ‘Sunburst’ varieties were treated during the first growing season after budding onto Gisela 5, Colt, or Mazzard rootstocks.
Results indicate that laterals may be succesfully controlled by this technique.
Three to five lateral shoots, with low vigor and wide crotch angles, were consistently formed, producing quality 1-year-old well-feathered plants suitable for spindle training in high density cherry orchards.
